What is the Respond to & Clean Up a Spill course?
This one-day course trains employees to respond to chemical and hazardous substance spills quickly and safely. It covers assessing a spill and its risks, deciding who needs to act, using the right equipment, containing and cleaning up the spill, and disposing of contaminated materials correctly. Learners also cover decontamination, personal protection and reporting. Do I need to be part of an emergency response team?
No. The course is for anyone who works where spills can happen, including warehouse staff, machine operators and maintenance teams. The sooner a spill is contained, the smaller the damage and the lower the risk to people and the environment. This training gives ordinary workers the confidence to act in the first few minutes instead of waiting for help.
What types of spills does the course cover?
It covers the common workplace spills: chemicals, fuels, oils, solvents and other hazardous liquids. You will learn to assess the risk of a spill, use spill kits and absorbents, contain the spill, and handle the contaminated material afterwards. The same response steps apply to most hazardous substances, and the course teaches you to read the hazard information before you act.
How long is the certificate valid?
There is no fixed expiry on the certificate itself. Most companies refresh spill response training every two years, depending on their risk assessment and how often spills occur in their operations. Certificates are issued in line with SAQA-aligned unit standards where applicable. Keep the certificate on file as proof of training, and ask your safety officer what interval applies in your workplace.
