Hazardous Materials Awareness Training

SAQA-aligned hazardous materials awareness training delivered online, on-site or at our centres in Midrand and Durban. Daily classes, no waiting period.

Quick answer

What is the Hazardous Materials Awareness course?

This one-day awareness course introduces employees to hazardous materials in the workplace. It covers what hazardous materials are, how they are classified, and the risks they carry. Learners work through hazard communication, labelling, Safety Data Sheets, and the basics of storage, segregation and emergency response. The outcome is a worker who recognises hazardous materials, understands the controls around them, and knows when to stop and report rather than guess. It suits general staff who may not handle chemicals directly but work where hazardous materials are present.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify hazardous materials and their classes in the workplace
  • Interpret hazard labels, markings and Safety Data Sheets
  • Apply safe storage, handling and segregation practices
  • Recognise emergency situations and follow spill or leak response procedures
  • Report hazards and incidents to the right person

Who should attend

  • General employees who work where hazardous materials are stored or used
  • New staff starting in warehouses, factories, workshops or laboratories
  • Contractors and visitors who need site hazard awareness
  • SHE representatives introducing chemical safety basics

Frequently asked questions

How much does Hazardous Materials Awareness cost?

Pricing for this one-day course depends on group size and delivery mode, so email us at info@rehtraining.co.za for a quote. We run daily classes, so you can book without a waiting period. Training is available at our centres in Midrand and Durban, on-site at your premises, or online. Group bookings are negotiable.

Is this the same as a HAZCHEM or dangerous goods course?

Not quite. Hazardous Materials Awareness is an entry-level course that covers identification, labelling, Safety Data Sheets and basic emergency response. Courses like Chemical Hazards (HAZCHEM) or Controlling Hazardous and Dangerous Goods go deeper into control measures and unit standard content. If your staff only need to recognise hazardous materials and act safely around them, this is the right starting point. Email us if you want help choosing.

How long is the course and how often should staff retrain?

The course takes one day. There is no fixed expiry on the certificate, but most companies refresh awareness training every two years, especially where staff change or new substances come into the workplace. Certificates are issued in line with SAQA-aligned unit standards where applicable. Keep the certificate on file as proof that your employees have completed the training.

Can you run this course at our workplace?

Yes. On-site training works well for this course because we can use your own substances, labels and procedures as examples. We also offer it at our training centres in Midrand and Durban, or online for the theory. Daily classes mean flexible dates. Email info@rehtraining.co.za to arrange a session and get a group quote.
